What do you need to know ahead of 2026 Malaysian Grand Prix?

KUALA LUMPUR – This weekend, Formula 1 returns to Malaysia at Sepang International Circuit for the 2026 Malaysian Grand Prix after a nine-year absence from the F1 calendar. The 2026 Malaysian GP is set as the replacement for canceled Bahrain GP at Sakhir International Circuit, which canceled alongside the Saudi Arabian GP at Jeddah due to ongoing war between Iran, Israel and the United States of America. And here's what we need to know ahead of this weekend's 2026 Malaysian GP.
1. George Russell, Kimi Antonelli, Oscar Piastri and 2025 F1 world champion Lando Norris will make their debuts at Sepang this weekend.

2. The 2016 winner at Sepang, Daniel Ricciardo has officially retired from his F1 career at the end of 2024 season.

3. The circuit is known for tragic deaths of motorcycle racers Marco Simoncelli (2011) and Afridza Munandar (2019).

4. The circuit has recently extended contracts to held Grand Prix motorcycle races until 2031 by FIM, while FIA is pending for the Formula 1 contract extension for the circuit.

5. The previous winner at Sepang, Max Verstappen subsequently won the world titles from 2021 to 2024. The Dutchman is looking for his podium streak at Sepang this weekend.

6. Sebastian Vettel, winner of Malaysian GPs for Red Bull Racing and Ferrari retired from his F1 career at the end of 2022 season.
