Countdown to Masters 2023: Scheffler's Players triumph and more spots ahead

AUGUSTA, GA and PONTE VEDRA, FL – We're just about less than a month away from golf's first major championship, the Masters Tournament, and the world's top 3 players are on the big battle for the green jacket: Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and the current world number one Scottie Scheffler, who has just won two events including PGA Tour's flagship The Players Championship on March 12. The Texan also won the Phoenix Open for two consecutive years. But there's one more tournament he will have to defend at his home state, WGC-Dell Matchplay, where last year he defeated Kevin Kisner for the title. The last player to win The Players and The Masters at the same year was Tiger Woods in 2001. Tiger went on to win his 2nd green jacket by two strokes over his arch-rivals Phil Mickelson and David Duval. Last year in 2022, Scheffler battled the likes of Cameron Smith, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and Sungjae Im to capture his first green jacket. If Scottie defends his 2nd green jacket, he will join the likes of Woods (2001-02), Jack Nicklaus (1965-66) and Sir Nick Faldo (1989-90) on achieving the feat, as Scheffler's fellow Texan Jordan Spieth faltered in 2016 after previously won in 2015. And as we mention in the previous article that Rory McIlroy will complete his grand slam as if the Northern Irishman wins the Masters.

- More spots to come
With the Augusta National commitee's announcement of LIV Golf players' allowance to play at the 2023 Masters, there will be few more tournaments left as a chance to exempt for golf's first major.
