2022 Masters Tournament preview and criteria

AUGUSTA, GA – The 2022 Masters Tournament will be the 86th edition of the Masters Tournament and the first of the men's four major golf championships held in 2022. It is scheduled to be played from April 7–10, 2022 at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.

Hideki Matsuyama will enter the tournament as defending champion, as Scottie Scheffler will make his 2nd Masters appearance as a new world no. 1 player.
Tiger Woods will make his 24th Masters appearance, as the five-time champion is looking for record-equalling sixth green jacket which currently being held by Jack Nicklaus. Woods' arch rival, three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson will missed his first Masters after playing for 26 consecutive years at Augusta National.

- Course changes
Holes 11 and 15 have been lengthened by 15 yards and 20 yards, respectively, from the 2021 Masters Tournament.

- Criteria
Participation in the Masters Tournament is by invitation only, and the tournament has the smallest field of the major championships. There are a number of criteria by which invites were awarded, including all past winners, recent major champions, leading finishers in the previous years' majors, leading players on the PGA Tour in the previous season, winners of full-point tournaments on the PGA Tour during the previous 12 months, leading players in the Official World Golf Ranking and some leading amateurs.

5. Players Championship champions (2020-2022)
6. 2021 U.S. Amateur winner and runner-up

8. 2021 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship winner
9. 2021 Latin-American Amateur Championship winner
10. 2021 U.S. Mid-Amateur winner
11. Top 12 and ties from 2021 Masters
12. Top 4 and ties from 2021 U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship respectively
13. Winners of PGA Tour events* between the 2021 Masters Tournament and the 2022 Masters Tournament
14. All players who qualified for the 2021 Tour Championship
15. The leading 50 players on the Official World Golf Ranking as of December 31, 2021 and March 28, 2022
16. Invited international players
17. Gold medalist at 2020 Tokyo Olympics (bonus criteria)

*Events must carry full-point allocation towards the FedEx Cup.

NOTES:
- The Masters Tournament committee may invite international players who are not otherwise qualified.
- Six-time Masters champion Jack Nicklaus and three-time Masters champion Gary Player will served as the honorary starters on Thursday morning to kick-off the 2022 Masters Tournament. On February 2022, two-time Masters champion Tom Watson was announced as the additional honorary starter for the tournament.
- The Masters champions gala dinner will be held on Tuesday evening with the use of health protocols and safety regulations to avoid COVID-19 contagions.
- Masters champions Sir Nick Faldo and Trevor Immelman will not play for this year's tournament, but still occupying duties as commentators and reporters during the tournament; Faldo from the Butler Cabin and Immelman at the 16th hole.
