2021 US Open - Medvedev's maiden grand slam dream realized after defeated Djokovic
For the first time since Maria Sharapova and Marat Safin, Russia has born a new tennis grand slam champion. Daniil Medvedev has achieved his dream of winning a grand slam title by defeating world number one Novak Djokovic in the US Open final. Medvedev previously had close calls to win his maiden grand slam title at US Open in 2019 and Australian Open in 2021.
For Medvedev (25), his first grand slam title became hopeful to mark the rise of Russian tennis domination since Safin and Sharapova's dominances in the 2000s.
“When I just came on tour, I was super aggressive but just kept hitting bumps because I didn’t know how to do anything else. Step-by-step with experience, I started to be really defensive. But I understood that just being defensive is not enough, so now what I’m trying to do is turn defense into offense” said Medvedev. “I want to say sorry for you, the fans, and Novak because we all know what he was going for today,” he said on court after winning the championship. “Today maybe you were a little bit more for Novak, but it’s completely understandable.”
