Sergio Perez takes maiden F1 win at Sakhir Grand Prix
Sergio Perez has his long-awaited dream to win a Formula 1 race being realized, after the Mexican driver takes his maiden career Formula 1 grand prix race win in Sakhir Grand Prix at Sakhir International Circuit, Sunday night (Dec 6).
Perez, who started fifth on the grid, jumps into third place behind two Mercedes drivers Valtteri Bottas and George Russell, before being collided by Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) at the Turn 4 in the opening lap, forcing the Racing Point driver to pit for repairing damaged front wing.
Charles Leclerc collided Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen on lap 1 of the race, causing Leclerc and Verstappen out of the race and Perez completed the race for the win.
Perez was found himself in last place after the safety car period, then he overtook all the drivers ahead of him including his teammate Lance Stroll and Renault's Esteban Ocon, courtesy of his two-stop strategy.
As the two Mercedes drivers Bottas and Russell suffered tire problems in the closing stages of the race, Perez never look back. The 30 year-old Mexican took the checkered flag to win his maiden F1 race after 87 laps.
"I'm speechless" said Perez via team radio after winning the race. The race marked Perez' biggest comeback in his career, after he tested positive of COVID-19 prior to British Grand Prix last August, and threw his podium chances away following his engine failure at Bahrain Grand Prix last weekend (Nov 29).
