After Rory Slam, who else to complete grand slam?
Augusta, GA – At the 89th Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday, Rory McIlroy successfully completed the grand slam by winning the Masters through sudden-death playoff (73rd hole) process. With the win, McIlroy joined Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player in post-World War II golf history to complete a career grand slam (winning all four different major championships: Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship); only the second non-American to achieve the feat after Player.
The lefty had three green jackets, two Wanamakers and one Claret Jug to his name, but Mickelson's only missing major to complete the grand slam is the U.S. Open, where he had became bridesmaid six times. With the 125th U.S. Open to be take place this June at Oakmont, Pennsylvania, the LIV Golf player is poised to complete the grand slam at the course that had been bad results for him. Could Mickelson become the oldest U.S. Open and major champion in history at age of 55?
The young Texan made an instant success before turning 25, winning the Masters and U.S. Open in 2015 and the British Open in 2017. However, over the past three years, Spieth is still struggling with his game, amidst of injury. With the PGA Championship takes place in May at the Quail Hollow Country Club in North Carolina, this must be the year for 31 year-old Spieth to raise the Wanamaker trophy with his name on it and complete the grand slam. His best result at the PGA Championship was a runner-up to Jason Day in 2015 when it was held at Whistling Straits.
With McIlroy completed the grand slam after a 11-year attempt, now there are only two players who's still attempting to complete the grand slam: PGA Tour's Jordan Spieth and LIV Golf's Phil Mickelson.
So, can Mickelson and Spieth follow McIlroy's footsteps to complete the grand slam this year? We'll wait and see!!
