2024 Australian Open: Sinner shines to capture maiden grand slam title

Melbourne – The 2024 Australian Open men's singles championship gave the biggest surprise since the start of the Open era. Top players like Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, and defending champion Novak Djokovic were the tournament favorites; however, a young 22 year-old Italian underdog named Jannik Sinner made his Rod Laver Arena debut trying to defy the odds. And he did by beating Medvedev in the final on Sunday (Jan 28).
Before Sinner, Adriano Panatta was the first Italian to win a grand slam title in the Open era at the 1976 Roland Garros. Prior to the start of the Open era, Nicola Pietrangeli was the most successful Italian to win two grand slam titles, both at French Open/Roland Garros. Flavia Penetta was the last Italian woman to win grand slam title at 2015 US Open.

Sinner, the no.4 seed, shocks the field throughout the 2024 Australian Open. In semifinal, he defeated defending champion Djokovic 6-1, 6-2, 6-7 and 6-3. Then in the championship (final) match on Sunday, Sinner was two sets down to Medvedev, however the Italian fought back to win three sets and claim his maiden grand slam title from Medvedev.
