Most compelling comeback stories of August: Rey Mysterio and Lucas Glover
Memphis, TN – This month, there have been two most compelling comeback stories from the two men who returned to the winning ways: Rey Mysterio won his third WWE United States Championship title after defeating Austin Theory on August 11 episode of WWE SmackDown, while Lucas Glover won back-to-back PGA Tour events at Wyndham Championship and FedEx St. Jude Championship. Here are the most compelling comeback stories from Rey Mysterio and Lucas Glover.
1. Rey Mysterio
Rey Mysterio won his first WWE U.S. title at the 2019 Money In The Bank in May. That year, the championship was on the RAW brand. The Mexican relinqushed the title in June due to that controversial match against Samoa Joe. Mysterio regained the title five months later on a episode of Raw by defeating AJ Styles. His reign was lasted by one month following his loss to Andrade Cien, the future husband of 14-time WWE Women's Champion Charlotte Flair.
Since then, Rey teamed up with his son Dominik to regain his U.S. title. However, the boiling point happened in fall 2022, when Dominik betrayed his father Rey after Dominik joined The Judgement Day with Finn Balor, Damian Priest and Rhea Ripley. Due to his son's betrayal, Rey formed a group called the Latino World Order, and became the team's leader, with Santos Escobar, Joaquin Wilde, Cruz del Toro and Zelina Vega joining forces.
On the night 1 of WrestleMania 39, the night after being inducted into WWE Hall Of Fame class of 2023, Rey defeated his son Dominik, thanks to the help of his fellow LWO members and Bad Bunny. Four months later, Rey picked his stablemate Escobar to contend for the U.S. title which being held by Austin Theory. However, Escobar was injured and unable to compete against Theory for the title. Moments later, Mysterio then decided to fight for the title and won the U.S. title.
2. Lucas Glover
The 2009 U.S. Open champion had also battled through hard times since his last PGA Tour win came at Wells Fargo Championship in 2011. He married Krista and became the father of two. Glover also faced injuries and managed to keep his PGA Tour official card alive. His ten-year winless era came to the end when he won the John Deere Classic by two strokes. Glover also had an early successful 2023 campaign including a fifth place finish at Barbasol. Three weeks later, he won the Wyndham Championship, thus eliminating Justin Thomas out of the FedEx Cup Playoffs in the process. After the win, his two kids told CBS Sports reporter Amanda Renner that they're so excited to see their dad Lucas in the Playoffs. A week later at the first Playoffs tournament, Lucas defeated Patrick Cantlay in the sudden-death to win FedEx St. Jude Championship. Lucas won US$5 million courtesy of back-to-back wins at Wyndham and St. Jude. Lucas continues his fight to win the FedEx Cup title, starting from this week's BMW Championship at Olympia Fields, Illinois, the course where Jim Furyk won the U.S. Open 20 years ago.
