Why Cherrybelle and Gugudan did not replicate the success of Girls' Generation and Twice?
Indonesian girl group Cherrybelle and South Korean girl group Gugudan are having similar bad lucks, as Gugudan went on to disband in December 2020, while Cherrybelle currently on indefinite hiatus since 2017. Those two groups used the concepts of what the most successful girl groups Girls' Generation and Twice ever used, but they failed to replicate the success.
1. Cherrybelle
Cherrybelle was formed on February 27, 2011 by Catz Entertainment (now CBM Entertainment), but they released their debut mini-album "Love is You" five months later in July. It was the only mini-album to feature Devi and Wenda, who parted ways from the group in 2012. In 2013, Cherrybelle released their 2nd mini-album "Diam-Diam Suka", before muslim member Anisa left the group later that year.
- Is Cherrybelle disbanding?
Speculations that Cherrybelle would have been disbanded was started in 2016 after the release of their third (or probably their last) mini-album "Reborn" (2015). The group have done some formation changes, including the departure of members Gigi, Ryn, Felly, Cherly, Steffy and Kezia in 2016. The group then held auditions across the country (Indonesia) to replace those departed members. Currently the group consisted of five new members: Muti, Tata, Onad, Fisca and Atha; while two of other original members Angel and Christy were elected as honorary members for the group. Cherrybelle is currently on the verge of being disbanded after they were not releasing their album since five years.
2. Gugudan
Gugudan was formed by Jellyfish Entertainment on June 28, 2016, and released their debut mini-album Act.1 The Little Mermaid on the same day. The group raised their popularity in 2017 by releasing Act.2 Narcissus in February, and Act.3 Chococo Factory in November, while member Soyee missed promotions for Act.3 Chococo Factory due to shoulder injury.
In February 2018, Gugudan released Act.4 Cait Sith, which was the last release to feature the youngest member Hyeyeon who left the group in September that year. Gugudan also expanded into two sub-units: Oguogu/5959 (Mina and Hyeyeon) and Semina (Sejeong, Mina and Nayoung).
Gugudan released their third, and what might had been as their final mini-album Act.5 New Action on November 6, 2018. Since then, the group never released their albums anymore, apart from the members' individual activities. Similar to Cherrybelle, Gugudan have won some of categories on various music awards.
- Journey's end for Gugudan
Unfortunately, it came into journey's end, as Gugudan were officially disbanded by Jellyfish Entertainment on December 31, 2020, although all of the members of the group will remained in Jellyfish Entertainment for more multiple years.
