2024 Australian GP: Sainz returns from injury to victory in a dramatic Australian GP race

Melbourne, VIC – Scuderia Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz Jr. returns to his winning ways in a dramatic and chaotic Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne on Sunday (March 24). The 29 year-old Spaniard had struggled with appendicitis injury he suffered two weeks earlier, which forced him to miss the Saudi Arabian GP and being replaced by F2 driver Oliver Bearman who finished seventh in Jeddah. Following his surgery from appendicitis, Sainz declared to continue competing at the remainder of the season. Free practice sessions at Melbourne saw Sainz gritted his teeth and qualified fourth fastest (but promoted to 2nd on the grid following Sergio Perez's grid penalty).

Verstappen made dramatically shocking early exit of Australian GP race after his engine blown and brake failure on his Red Bull Racing RB20 while leading the first five laps of the race.

At the first five laps of the race, Sainz, who started 2nd dropped to fifth after being relegated by his teammate Charles Leclerc, as well as his former McLaren teammate Lando Norris. However, drama happened as championship leader and reigning world champion Max Verstappen, who led the race in the early stages, suddenly suffered engine failure on his Red Bull Racing RB20. Verstappen later admitted that he had also braking failures on his car. Following Verstappen's exit from the race, Sainz began to regain places and led the race in the middle stages. The race ended in the safety car after Mercedes driver George Russell's crash in the final two laps. Sainz's Ferrari teammate Leclerc finished 2nd with Sainz's former McLaren teammate Norris completed the podium third.

"It was a really good race. I felt really good out there. Of course, a bit stiff and especially physically. It wasn't the easiest, but I was lucky that I was more or less on my own and I could manage my pace, manage the tyres, manage everything. And it wasn't the toughest race of all. But yeah, very happy, very proud of the team. Happy to be in a 1-2 with Charles (Leclerc) here. It shows that the hard work pays off. And yeah, life sometimes is crazy, you know. What happened at the beginning of the year, then the podium in Bahrain, then the appendix (appendicitis injury), the comeback, the win. It's a roller coaster, but I loved it, and yeah, I'm extremely happy" said Sainz in the post-race press conference. The win elevated Sainz to fourth in current standings.

This became Sainz's first victory since 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, which is also a street-circuit grand prix race. The next race (fourth round) will take place in the Suzuka International Circuit for the Japanese Grand Prix.
